BOANN DISTILLERY
Boann Distillery was founded by the Cooney family. In the last five year has won numerous awards, one being whisky of the year, won at the whisky awards. They are also the first distillery in the world to use nano technology. Our best performing distillery over the past 3 years.
A large Victorian distillery, Ardmore has a heft and scale which is surprising given its gentle rural surroundings. It is also a rarity in terms of style - a peated Highland malt. For years it was the last distillery to fly this particular flag. It was also the second-last distillery to retain coal fires under its stills.
Royal Brackla Distillery
The industry giant increased production in 1964, but was forced to close it down between 1985 and 1991 due to an industry surplus. Four years later, it was one of the distilleries sold to Bacardi-Martini when the then newly-created Diageo had to offload Dewar's and attendant distilleries.
Royal Brackla remained a quiet producer of malt for blending until 2014, when Dewar's announced that a five-strong range of single malts would be launched in 2015, part of a company-wide programme dubbed The Last Great Malts.
In October 2019, Dewar's unveiled plans for a revamped Royal Brackla range, comprising 12-, 18- and 21-year-old expressions, bottled at a higher strength of 46% abv and without caramel colouring. The new range was due to be rolled out from spring 2020.
Tamnavulin Distillery
SPEYSIDE SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
This is a large plant whose sign rather baldly states 'NO VISITORS' rather than 'WELCOME'. This is not unfriendliness, simply a manifestation of the reality of the whisky business. In fact, there used to be a visitor facility nearby. The majority of distilleries are there to make spirit for blends, not to entertain tourists.
Its half dozen stills are large, the fermentation short and the make is light and cereal accented.
TULLIBARDINE DISTILLERY
HIGHLAND SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
The requirements of a single malt house - which Tullibardine became - necessitated some tweaking of the spirit run (introducing more high-toned floral notes now coming to the fore, with the nuttiness being dialled down) and a more 21st century wood policy with a massive influx of fresh casks.
TOMINTOUL DISTILLERY
Situated on the banks of the Spey's main tributary, the Avon (pronounced A'an), and taking its name from Scotland's highest village nearby, Tomintoul is another 1960s distillery whose make has only recently been more widely seen as single malt.
TEITH MILL DISTILLERY - BLENDED SCOTCH WHISKY
This 1970s blended Scotch featured some of the first whisky to be distilled at Deanston.
Teith Mill was the name for a 40% abv blended Scotch whisky centred around the first spirit to be produced at Perthshire's
Deanston distillery. The distillery's owner, Brodie Hepburn Ltd, also owned Tullibardine and Macduff distilleries, so it's likely a proportion of their malt was also used in the blend.
The Teith Mill brand name was also later used for a NAS single malt bottling exclusively for British retailer Marks & Spencer.
